Chief Executive
Salary range £139,044 – £158,433 (Relocation Policy applies)
The Chief Executive and Head of Paid Service is the key position within our council.
You’ll be responsible for providing the leadership and vision to ensure the council is structured, managed and resourced effectively, enabling us to deliver our priorities and objectives.
You’ll continue to build on the success we’ve achieved to date, by leading the council on its improvement journey whilst ensuring stability of services and a drive in performance.
You’ll be supported by our established team of senior officers – each employed because of their enthusiasm, focus and commitment to Wrexham.
You’ll have the ability to make tough decisions and resolve issues as they arise, and be adept at building relationships and working with elected members and other public service officials, including Welsh Government.
This role requires the ability to operate in a political climate, so you’ll need finely tuned political instincts. You’ll need the skills and experience to understand the Welsh political context – including devolved and legal matters – and the importance of Welsh culture.
We’re looking for a role model who demonstrates these required values and behaviours and leads by example.
We want an ambassador who will be passionate about Wrexham and embrace the culture and heritage of both the county borough and Wales as a whole.
You won’t be afraid to do things differently and challenge the way we work. And we won’t be afraid to give you all the support you need in achieving our collective goals.

Dear Applicant
Thank you for your interest in the vacancy for the Chief Executive at Wrexham County Borough Council. This is a very exciting role and these are indeed extraordinary times for us in Wrexham.
As well as overseeing the delivery of day-to-day essential services to our local communities and residents, you will also lead the council through transformational change and a number of high-impact projects.
The city of Wrexham is a very exciting place to be with our newfound fame attracting visitors, new businesses and investment. The Wrexham Gateway regeneration scheme, centred around the Wrexham General train station adjacent to the Wrexham AFC football stadium, is a reflection of our ambition to capitalise on those opportunities and create a modern, attractive, vibrant and people-focussed city. The new Kop stand at the football stadium will be iconic and world famous. The development at the station with the multi-modal transport hub and new offices will be similarly eye-catching and welcoming to visitors.
We are proud to be hosting the National Eisteddfod this year, supporting the City of Culture Bid for 2029, as well as helping to develop key infrastructure projects within the city centre that will focus on our economy.
Wrexham is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, has a rich industrial past, including being a major centre for coal and lead mining and a proud history and heritage associated with the Armed Forces which is an integral part of our history and culture.
The above are just a flavour of Wrexham and the exciting opportunities we have to take Wrexham forward, working with partners and stakeholders to deliver a sustainable economic future. Partnership and collaboration is key to us in Wrexham and we want our new Chief Executive to be a role model in this area.
The role involves working closely with elected members and you will need to have an understanding and empathy with regard to the political make-up of the Council and members’ role in relation to decision-making.
We have a strong senior leadership team that will support you all the way. Every member of the team is an expert in their field, committed to delivering services for local people and helping Wrexham achieve its full potential. As Head of Paid Service you will have the opportunity to lead a workforce that is creative, hard-working and dedicated.
I do hope that having read the application pack you will wish to submit an application and if you would like to speak to me about the role, please do contact me on 01978 292581.
